The perfect wine and food pairing match is a rewarding experience that is not soon forgotten. Just look in your local book store wine section and you are sure to find numerous books on the subject. The reason many people shy away from food and wine pairing is uncertainty, fear of making a mistake, and high cost of purchasing wine and food. We will give you a few suggestions and strategies for wine and food pairing to help you become more confidant in your choices. Also remember to use our wine guide to maximize your wine purchasing power by choosing quality wines that are under twenty dollars.
Strategies
There are three main strategies you should follow when pairing wine with food.
The first and most important is to drink wine that you like. If you enjoy a certain food that is not traditionally paired with your wine of choice you should disregard the rules and get what you like. Don't worry, the sommelier is not going to storm out and call every ones attention to your "big mistake". Remember wine is meant to be enjoyed. Have fun and don't stress out about all the stupid rules.
The second strategy is to compliment your food with a wine that shows similar characteristics. The idea behind this is to have a wine that is similar to the dish, thus accentuating the complex or simple nuances of both the wine and the food.
The Third strategy is to counterbalance your food or wine with an opposite pairing. By counterbalancing your food and wine you create a dual between the food and wine, giving each a chance to shine and create a ying and yang type balance.
